Space: 1999 is a British-Italian science-fiction series created by Gerry Anderson and Sylvia Anderson for ITV. It ran from September 4, 1975 to November 5, 1977 for two seasons.

Series summary[]

After an explosion knocks the moon out of Earth's orbit, the crew of a station based on the satellite find themselves helplessly flying out into space. There, they become the first humans to encounter new alien life-forms, dystopian civilisations and mindbending phenomena. The first season implied that some kind of unknown force was guiding the moon and its occupants, but this subplot was dropped for the second season, which focused on simpler, more action-packed stories.

The show was largely produced for the UK, with an eye on the US market; the first season was also co-funded by the Italian station RAI.

Westphall connections to Space: 1999[]

In Red Dwarf "Psirens", the crew of that show fly over a planet full of spaceship debris. Among the crashed ships is an Eagle ship from Space: 1999.
