Supernatural was an American science fiction series created by Eric Kripke. It ran on The WB from September 13, 2005 to May 4, 2006 and then began running on The CW from September 28, 2006 to November 19 2020, for 15 seasons with 327 episodes.

Spin-offs[]

  • Ghostfacers is a spin-off created after the backdoor pilot episode, "Ghostfacers". It was a 10-part web series.
  • Supernatural: Bloodlines was to be a spin-off of Supernatural, though only the backdoor pilot "Bloodlines" was ever aired.
  • Supernatural: Wayward Sisters was to be a spin-off of Supernatural, though only the backdoor pilot "Wayward Sisters" was ever aired.
  • The Winchesters is a prequel series beginning in fall 2022, following the history of John Winchester and Mary Campbell, and the true story of how they came together.

Westphall connections in Supernatural[]

  • Gas-N-Sip, the fictional gas station chain originating in the 1990 film Say Anything..., is frequently mentioned and seen throughout the series. It would later appear in The Vampire Diaries and 9-1-1.
  • A radio broadcast from Jack Killian from the series Midnight Caller is heard in "Salvation".
  • An Orb of Thesulah from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel appeared as a minor plot point in "The Mentalists".
  • The fictional town of Rock Ridge from Blazing Saddles is visited in "Yellow Fever'.
  • In "Hammer of the Gods" when Gabriel talks to Kali, he suggests that they should leave earth for Pandora, the fictional planet from Avatar.
  • In "The Man Who Would Be King", when Castiel remembers the fall of the Tower of Babel, the Babylonian palaces and temples from Intolerance can be seen. This is because footage from that film was used in this episode.
  • In "Regarding Dean", Rowena MacLeod, a witch, suggests using the Obliviate spell to help Dean with his memory. This spell was invented by the Harry Potter franchise and first appeared in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
  • In the Men of Letters bunker in "Clip Show", a file for Ichabod Crane from Sleepy Hollow can be seen.
  • In "Bring 'em Back Alive", among the prayers heard by Lucifer is "Dear God, make me a bird, so I can fly far, far away from here". This is the prayer uttered by Jenny in Forrest Gump.

Westphall connections to Supernatural[]

  • In Lucifer "Orgy Pants to Work", the angel Remiel mentions Castiel from this series.

Brand connections in Supernatural[]

Parodies[]

  • In the season 5 episode "Changing Channels", Sam and Dean are sucked into a world of TV shows that include parodies of Grey's Anatomy, CSI, Knight Rider, and more. Character and actor names are also parodied. The Grey's parody, Dr. Sexy, MD, is frequently referenced throughout the series.

Non-Westphall connections in Supernatural[]

There are a multitude of mentions and memorabilia throughout the show referencing characters from the Scooby-Doo franchise.

  • The season 6 episode "The French Mistake" shows Sam and Dean in an alternate reality similar to real life, where they are actors playing characters, and at one point shows a clip on a computer of Jensen Ackles starring in Days of Our Lives.
  • The season 12 episode "Regarding Dean" shows the episode "Hassle in the Castle" from Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! on a television.
  • The season 13 episode "The Rising Son" shows the episode "That's Snow Ghost" from Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! on a television.
  • Supernatural crossed over with Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! in the season 13 episode Scoobynatural. In the episode, a child's ghost possesses a television and transports Sam, Dean, and Castiel into the episode "A Night of Fright is No Delight".

Julian Richings' character of Death from Supernatural also appeared in the 2011 short film Dave vs Death.

In "Nightshifter", Ronald Resnick has a copy of the Fortean Times Featuring Cybermen, a character from Doctor Who on the cover. This was a real issue of that magazine (dated May 2006), and thus does not constitute a crossover with Doctor Who.
